Avatar is a very popular American "anime" where some are born with the ability to control the four elements: water, earth, fire, or air. Only the Avatar, Aang, can master all four elements and defeat the evil Fire Nation.
The Legend of Korra picks up at the birth of the next Avatar, a spunky waterbender named Korra. The series follows her many adventures in Republic City. This series is more serious than Avatar, but is still a great show.
